What is the Test Format And Total Time for IELTS Listening, Writing and Reading?

IELTS is an English language test that is used to determine the student’s proficiency in English language. It is recognized all over the world so if they are looking to go abroad for education, a job, or migration then being a professional in the English language is important.

The IELTS test has four sections: IELTS listening, writing, reading, and speaking in detail.  Each section of the IELTS test holds great importance because it tests different skills of the student and being tested on a variety of sections makes it easier to judge how experienced the test taker is with the English language. 

What Does the IELTS listening Section Contain? 

The IELTS Listening section has 4 parts in total. Part 1 and 2 have a conversation on a general topic between two speakers like the topic could be travel arrangements. Moreover, one person speaks in part 2. In part 3 and 4 the topic changes to educational and training situations. Hence, in part 3 there is a conversation between two people, and in part 4 there is one person who is speaking. 

Furthermore, There will be 40 questions in total and you will be given 30 minutes plus an additional 10 minutes to write your answers on the answer sheet. The recordings will come in numerous accents like North American, British, Australian, and New Zealand and you will be able to listen to them once. 

What Does the IELTS Writing Section Contain? 

Task 1:

The IELTS writing section has 2 parts in total. In task 1 you have to write a letter that could be formal, informal, or semi-formal depending on the topic. Moreover, The topic given in the question would be a common one like writing to the college accommodation officer to talk about problems related to your accommodation. The question would probably be asking for information or explaining a situation in the letter. Moreover, The word limit for this task is 150 words in 20 minutes. 

Task 2:

In task 2 you will be given a point of view, argument, or problem for which you will need to write an essay of about 250 words. You can also give examples from your life situations to make the essay more relatable and interesting. Moreover, the time allowed for this task is 40 minutes. 

What Does the IELTS Reading Section Contain? 

There are three sections in the IELTS reading. 

Section One:

The first section contains passages related to everyday topics. This would be information from notices, advertisements, and timetables. 

Section Two:

The second section is more concentrated on work-related topics like job descriptions, contracts, training, etc.

Section Three:

Section three is more concentrated on descriptive and instructive texts. This section is the most complicated and it is taken from newspapers, books, and online resources. 

Furthermore, the total number of questions is 40 and the total time allowed is 60 minutes including the transfer time. 

Conclusion: 

It is important to manage your time well during this IELTS listening, writing, and reading exam because there is not a lot of time to waste on each of the sections.
